During the dialogue session Sr Khor Khim Leng raised a pertinent subject of increased Malaysian investors in the UK and how RISM UKC can play the role of bridging the gap between the two countries. The Honourable Minister responded by encouraging two way investment opportunities rather than only focussing on Malaysian investors in the UK.

RISM UKC Committee Members were invited to His Excellency Datuk Sri Zakaria Sulong’s official residence in Hampstead,Londonfor a small gathering to celebrate Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di Pertuan Agung’s birthday. RISM UKC was represented by Sr Faisal Zaidin, Sr Khor Khim Leng and Sr Leong Chee Loong.

The intimate gathering was also attended by representatives from;

Issues discussed revolved around membership, committee members, previous and forthcoming activies, current statement of accounts as well as forthcoming meetings and AGM’s in Kuala Lumpur. Also discussed was studies/research on BIM which the UK Chapter may assist.

London’s Merdeka Carnival is regarded as a major calendar event for Malaysians in the UK as well as Europe. Last year’s Merdeka Carnival was officiated by YAB Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia and the year before it was officiated by Seri Paduka Baginda Yang Di Pertuan Agung HRH the King of Malaysia who was accompanied by a few Cabinet Ministers.

His Excellency Datuk Zakaria Sulong the High Commisioner of Malaysia to the United Kingdom was ever so kind to extend an invitation to 10 ISM UK Chapter Committee Members during a ‘Majlis Bersama Rakyat’ dinner reception hosted by the High Commissioner’s office.

The dinner was organised at the request of His Majesty Yang Dipertuan Agung who was in London at the invitation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth to attend the Royal Wedding.

His Excellency Datuk Zakaria Sulong requested Sr Faisal Ahmad Zaidin and Sr Mariati Baharin to be seated at the two main high tables with the Yang Dipertuan Agung and Raja Permaisuri Agung.

National Art Gallery Cafe, London

A meeting between the ISM UK Chapter Committee Members, Sr Ong See Lian and Sr Chua Siow Leng was held at the National Art Gallery Cafe, Central London on 16th of March 2011. The informal meeting was attended by all Committee Members with the exception of Chairman Sr Faisal Ahmad Zaidin who was in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia at the time. Amongst the issues discussed were:-

• Future Activities including Reception Dinner for the Malaysian delegates in July 2011;
• ISM Membership queries and issues;
• Board of Quantity Surveyors registration guide;
• Funding protocol;
• Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Activities;

It was agreed that regular contacts shall be made to update on activities held and proposed by ISM UK Chapter.

ISM UK Chapter has organised another activity for UK based surveyors which was held at the Malaysian Education Hall. This event happens to be the first installation of UK Chapter’s event for the year 2011 and it attracted almost 50 participants. The UK Chapter is pleased to report that there are 101 surveyors currently based in the UK.

The event kicked off with honourable guest Sr. Ong See Lian (PPISM) who presented a topic on Quantity Surveying and Global Changes. Sr Ong’s presentation gave participants a new insight on the industry that is going through profound changes.

This then followed on with honourable guest Sr. Chua Siow Leng’s (PPISM) presentation titled ISM’s Two Tier Registration. Sr. Chua’s presentation attracted more than a few questions and queries from the participants.

As part of UK Chapter’s regular feature where members of UK Chapter present papers, on this occasion Sr. Mariati Baharin (ISM UKC Protemp Comittee) stepped up to the plate and delivered a very impressive presentation titled Thames Link Programme An Insight of Farringdon Station.

In addition to the technical presentations, the UK Chapter also organised interviews for aspiring members. The interviews were conducted by Sr Ong See Lian (PPISM) and Sr Chua Siow Leng (PPISM) for the following candidates:-

• Leong Chee Loong
• Chong Chen Leong
• Khor Teik Min

The event was concluded with drinks and light refreshments where participants had the opportunity to mingle and those more inquisitive had one on one chat with our honorary guests and UK Chapter Committee members.

The courtesy call was held at Education Malaysia’s (formerly known as Malaysian Students Department) office at Queensborough Terrace, Bayswater, London on Friday 26th November 2010. The meeting did appear to begin the process of not only an introduction to ISM UK Chapter but also rationalisation of the logic and method of how ISM UK Chapter can contribute in achieving Education Malaysia’s objectives.

Following the meeting, ISM UK Chapter was asked to write officially to Education Malaysia to request the following;

• List of Malaysian students studying in UK and Ireland in related disciplines.
• Inclusion of ISM’s link in Education Malaysia’s website.
• Register interest to participate in the forthcoming Career Fair organised by Education Malaysia in March 2011.

The dialogue was concluded with assurances to synergise efforts and efficient communication between ISM UK Chapter and Education Malaysia.
